St Anne’s founder’s gatehouse set to make way for new library

Plans to demolish Founder’s Gatehouse, a 21-bedroom structure at St Anne’s College on Woodstock Road, have been given the green light.

Heritage groups had previously applied to have the gatehouse listed with the Oxford City Council on the grounds that it was architecturally important.

No student protest appears to have been made, however, to prevent the removal of the 1966 building, which had served as the college lodge in the past, and currently houses pigeon-holes for all the undergraduates, tutors and staff.

The gatehouse is now set to make way for new library, although not for another two to three years.

Students from the college have said that demolishing the gatehouse might also provide for better views of the college’s Grade II listed Hartland House.
