Christ Church College has pledged to give collection money to help its sister church in Christchurch, which was damaged by New Zealand earthquake last week.
Christchurch Cathedral in New Zealand has close ties with Oxford as it was founded by members of the College in the mid-19th Century.
Oxford’s Christ Church made Sunday’s donation in recognition of the ties.
The Very Revd Christopher Lewis, Dean of Christ Church said: “We’ve kept up a really strong link both with the city, the cathedral and the university, so it’s particularly horrifying to us because we know a lot of the people there.”
Oxford’s cathedral has opened a condolences book in its ante-chapel and launched an appeal for financial aid on its website.
