Pembroke to build footbridge

College News News

Pembroke College is planning to build a new footbridge over Brewer Street, which will link the college’s original buildings to its new quad.

The college is developing a new complex including a theatre, art gallery, teaching rooms, and housing for 116 students at a cost of £29 million. The expansion is due to open in October 2012.

The glass and steel bridge will be constructed almost a century after Hertford built the Bridge of Sighs spanning New College Lane.

John Church, Bursar of Pembroke, said the design had been chosen “to meet the requirements of the highways department, while addressing the concerns of English Heritage and the city council that the bridge should blend into its surroundings.”
