It’s been a long time since I have heard any of my own writing read out to me, except in the occasional case of a frustrated tutor puzzling out my handwriting.  So to sit down on Friday and have four of Oxford’s finest actresses read out my just-finished script was an incredibly surreal experience.  I hunched over my laptop, pretending to follow the script along but really watching their eyes, looking for the first signs of disgust or disappointment or the moment when they were sure to wordlessly leave the room, set fire to the script and jump up and down on it shouting “There! Now you can never hurt anyone again!”

I made it clear I considered this a first draft and the suggestions everyone made after the reading were smart, insightful and helpful.  There wasn’t much time for post-read through euphoria with the play on in 6th week, the middle of OxBardFest2012!

Unsex Me Here is a piece based on Shakespeare’s monologues for female characters and it will be performed in Blackwell’s Norrington room. If you’re in to Shakespeare, feminism or what it looks like when small Irish women go mad with nerves and start chewing bookshelves, you should come along!

“Unsex Me Here” is being performed in Blackwell’s Norrington Room on the 9th, 11th and 12th of May at 19:30, 18:30 and 14:30 respectively
