Six Oxford professors have been elected to fellowships at the Academy of Medical Sciences.
They will be officially admitted to the society, which has over 1,000 fellows, in June. Professors Tipu Aziz, Rury Holman, Stephen MacMahon, Gero Miesenböck, Anant Parekh and Chris Ponting were chosen from 354 candidates.
Professor Aziz, who works at the Nuffield Department of Surgical Sci- ences, said: “The Academy is a font of expertise and I look forward to helping with their work. I would like to thank my group, without whom I wouldn’t be able to carry out my work.”
Professor Ponting, deputy director of the MRC Functional Genomics Unit in the Department of Physiol- ogy, Anatomy and Genetics, said: “I started off as a student doing physics in Oxford and never thought for one moment then that I would be doing research into the fundamental biol- ogy of health and disease.”
