Sir Roger Bannister will start Oxford’s annual half marathon.

Sir Roger, now 83 years old, became the first man to run a mile in under four minutes in 1954 at the Iffley Road running track. The former athlete will fire the starting pistol when the race takes place at the beginning of next Michaelmas term.

This year the event is in aid of Helen and Douglas House, a children’s hospice in East Oxford.

Over 2,000 runners took part last year and up to three times that number are expected to take part when the race is held on 14th October.

The route will take in a variety of Oxford sites with participants running through Christ Church meadows and past the Mini plant in Cowley.
