This year’s Norrington table has caused a few surprises, with dramatic changes in rank from several colleges.
Whilst New and St John’s still dominate at the top of the league, Harris Manchester has raised a few eyebrows by moving up twenty places to fifth.
Likewise, Pembroke has boosted itself from bottom last year, to half way up the table, and Merton is back in the top three, redeeming itself from last year’s plummet.
There were some disappointments, though – Keble dropped from nineteen places, into 27th, only three places above Lady Margaret Hall.
Throughout the whole university, 942 firsts were awarded, of which New took 52. Only 24 thirds were given, of which Keble and Queen’s took three each.
Of the permanent private halls, Ripon came first, with two of its five finalists receiving a first.
According to the university’s website, “[The Norrington score] is calculated by attaching a score of 5 to a 1st class degree, 3 to a 2:1 degree, 2 to a 2:2 degree, 1 to a 3rd class degree and 0 to a pass, Honours Pass and Unclassified Honours. The percentage expressed is calculated by dividing the total college score by the total possible score the college could attain (ie number of degrees awarded per college x score of 5).”
