Bleak future for People’s Supermarket

News

Volunteers at Cowley Road’s The People’s Supermarket have this week admitted that the future for the business looks bleak.According to acting manager Anton Saberimuttu, the supermarket owes £7,000 in rent, which it is unable to pay.

He told The Oxford Mail that he was more frustrated by the dearth of enthusiasm shown by members, saying: “We don’t have enough money to pay the landlord by December 1 but it is more disappointing that the majority of members have not been able to do their four-hour shift.”The not-for-profit enterprise is kept running by volunteers, who each give £12 annually to be involved in the scheme.

Hannah Hoechner, a director at the People’s Supermarket, told the paper: “It is a disappointment for everyone but the rent is just too high for this kind of business.”
