“How you act has extremely important consequences”: open letter to the Oxford Union

The OUSU Women’s Campaign and It Happens Here have written an open letter to the Oxford Union in light of yesterday’s news regarding President Ben Sullivan.

Mr Sullivan was arrested on suspicion of rape and attempted rape, and was released on bail without charge until June 18th.

“In light of the arrest of the Oxford Union President on suspicion of rape and attempted rape, we write to invite you to participate in OUSU sexual consent workshop. We feel sure that you will want to demonstrate your commitment to creating a safe space for women around Oxford. The Union is a central and prestigious institution of our university, and has the privilege of impacting the lives of many Oxford University students, as such how you act has extremely important consequences.

As a committee which represents a large number of women members, we expect you to be committed to fostering attitudes of respect, equality, and consent.  As such, we would like to invite you to take part in an OUSU Sexual Consent Workshop before the end of Trinity Term.  Further, we would invite you to make such training a requirement for each future committee of the Union.  We believe that this would demonstrate your commitment to a project designed to create a culture in which sexist attitudes and non-consensual sex are both completely unacceptable.”
