Union manifestos released: who’s running, why, and what it all means

News University News

This term sees all of the top four officer positions in the Union contested.

The presidency will be the first three-way race to the top for several terms, contested by Chris Frost (Oriel), Sunny Jain (Queen’s), and Lisa Wehden (Worcester).

Nathan Akehurst (Lincoln) will face Charlie Vaughan (St John’s) for Librarian, the de facto Vice President.

A Corpus Christi student,  NamPhuong Dinh, is set to battle Ben Allen from St Benet’s for Treasurer.

Finally, Dom Merchant of New College will take on Wadhamite Annie Teriba for the position of Secretary.

Voting will be held on Friday, and is open to members of the Society only. The successful candidates for President, Librarian and Treasurer will take office in Hilary, while the successful Secretary will take office next term.

Chris Frost – Oriel

LOST MORE ELECTIONS THAN ANY OTHER CANDIDATE

(spent too much time giving out my Union business cards in Oxford clubs, not enough time hacking)

Experienced: was a Returning Officer’s Assistant for 5 minutes, 21 seconds.

Raised some money for the Union, but spent most of my time at lunch.

Great PR: described by two national newspapers as both “cruel” and “arrogant”.

Once named a Union social after myself.

Dedicated: Once gained two stone in ONE TERM from Jaegerbombs and Domino’s.

Good at going out: attended 85% of Thursday Bridge in past 2 years.

The STRONGEST CANDIDATE (physically)

I look extremely good in white tie.

I have been forced to attend seven debates.

Debates will be shortened and moved to 5am to encourage early rising.

I will replace President’s Drinks with a weekly Bridge pre-lash for ALL members.

H8rz gna h8.

Sunny Jain – Queen’s

After the worst time since I matriculated, the Union needs a NEW BEGINNING and a CLEAN SLATE

HONEST: Not your most experienced candidate – have only served 2 terms on Committee

DEDICATED: Worked over 35 vacation days and have invited American presidential candidate for next year.

WELL-ROUNDED: Scientist, Passionate Bagpiper, Debater, Debater, Amateur Boxer, MBA Cricket Team Social Secretary.

EXPERIENCED: Helped arrange the Putin Debate and was the opening speaker in it.

HARD WORKER: Worked on Career Fair and in socials; took Prof. John Nash for a stroll; worked at the Moroccan Mystique Ball until 3am.

PRINCIPLED: Voted FOR giving members voice to discuss the £1,000 legal expenses.

PLEDGE: Graduate access scheme, random ballot for President’s drinks.

AND EVEN IF YOU DON’T VOTE FOR ME, MUMMY WILL STILL LOVE ME.

Lisa Wehden – Worcester

OUR UNION needs radical reform and moderniSation: a society driven by issues, not internal politics.

I have already worked for TRANSPARENCY (IMPEACHMENT MECHANISM) and greater ACCESSIBILITY (GRADUATE SCHEME).

PLEDGE: ONLINE MANIFESTOS & HUSTINGS

I have delivered proven results and worked harder than any other candidates:

•Brought you more speakers: RICHARD DAWKINS, JOEY BARTON, BERNARD KOUCHNER. Facilitated BILLY JOEL, BRONESS LAWRENCE AND TOMMY WISEAU!

•Invited more than 300 speakers to the society

•Single-handedly organized the sell-out “Prohibition Social”, co-organize the Summer social AND worked Moroccan Mystique Ball all day and night

•Delegate to Debate Selection Committee and assisted in 8 debates.

•I worked on 400,000 MEMBERSHIPDRIVE this Michaelmas.

The Union is a place to air controversial ideas and but it can still be an inclusive and inspiring place.
