OUSU condemns Marine Le Pen visit

News University News

OUSU Council has approved a motion to “unequivocally condemn” Front National leader Marine Le Pen ahead of her visit to the Oxford Union tomorrow.

The Council also mandated OUSU President Louis Trup to email all Oxford students and notify them of tomorrow evening’s student protest outside the Union.

Passed by a vote of 40 to 12, the motion criticises the Union for inviting Le Pen, and mandates a letter to be sent from the OUSU Executive to the Union committee, in which OUSU will ask the Union to “refrain [from] inviting such speakers in the future”.

The Council rejected an amendment to make “no-platforming fascists” part of official OUSU policy.

The motion was proposed by OUSU BME officer Nikhil Venkatesh and seconded by Wadham SU Vice President Aliya Yule.
