Mansfield JCR voted this week to grant Extraordinary membership to the four employees of the Alternative Tuck Shop.
The Holywell Road establishment, notable for its efficient and friendly customer service as well as a wide selection of paninis and sandwiches, has been a favourite of the college’s – and many others’ – students for many years.
The staff at ATS were enthusiastic about the motion. Mohammed Karr, who works the till at the shop, spoke to The Oxford Student. “We’re really happy about the motion. It’s so nice to know that people think about us in that way,” he said.
“Thank you to everyone at Mansfield who voted for the motion and to everyone who didn’t – it’s great to be thought of as part of the community.”
“Generations of Mansfielders are grateful for the friendliness, reliability and brutal sandwich-making efficiency of the four men of the ATS.”
The motion passed at the JCR meeting with no votes against. It granted extraordinary membership to the four staff members (from left to right above): Karr, Mouloud Iratni, Kamal Uddin, and Sofiane Chettah. It also described the shop as “one of Mansfield’s favourite eateries.”
Joe Inwood, JCR president at Mansfield, helped to organise the motion. “Generations of Mansfielders are grateful for the friendliness, reliability and brutal sandwich-making efficiency of the four men of the ATS,” he said to The Oxford Student. “They are welcome at our JCR at any time. Some may say this motion was too light-hearted for a serious JCR meeting, but frankly Trump was inaugurated on Friday and time is running out to recognise those we appreciate.”
The motion was presented to the JCR by Kieran Zielinski, a second-year PPEist. He said that “Mansfield students love the food at the Alternative Tuck Shop,” and praised its “great choice of sandwiches and fantastic service.”
