Gunfire at Westgate

Paradise and Castle street have been closed off by an ongoing police operation responding to a series of loud gunshots heard outside the Westgate Centre.

Thames Valley Police has asked that people “please avoid the area”.

At 5:21 PM they tweeted that: “Armed response officers are at a residential property in Paradise Square following a report shortly after 1.15pm today that a man had access to a firearm.

“Shots were fired from the property and police returned fire. Officers are currently negotiating with a man”.

On Twitter Janet (@jlouiseErle) shared that there was “shooting behind Oxford Castle. Helicopters hovering. Asked to remain in hotel room.”

Staff at The Castle Pub have confirmed there is a large police presence in the area. Local bus services have cancelled routes passing along Castle and Paradise street.

There have been reports that flats in the area have been evacuated.

Ambulance staff have confirmed they are currently treating one patient near the scene for non life threatening injuries. David Gallagher, a spokesperson for South Central Ambulance Service said the following: “We have another ambulance and a rapid response vehicle at the scene and further resources en route to support those already at the scene, but there are currently no further patients.”
