St Edmund Hall’s Governing Body today announced the election of their new Principal, Professor Katherine Willis.

Willis has been the Director of Science at the Royal Botanic Gardens in Kew, south-west London, for the last 5 years. In this capacity, she oversaw over 370 scientists, the team’s research efforts and the garden’s collections.

She was key to the development of Kew’s first Science Strategy in which she and Richard Deverell outlined Kew’s aim “to make a unique and valuable contribution to plant and fungal science.”

She also directed the popular Roots to Riches series for BBC Radio 4 that aimed at increasing public understanding and involvement in the sciences.

Aside from publishing over 160 papers in international publications and a handful of academic books, Willis has also received many awards and Fellowships in recent years. These include Honorary Fellowships at St Hugh’s College, Oxford (2015) and Selwyn College, Cambridge (2017), and an Honorary Doctorate, University of Bergen (also 2017).

She will succeed the current Principal, Professor Keith Gull, as of the 1st October 2018.
