In a recent excursion to the harsh environment that is home to the Hackius, I have observed a stark change in contenders for positions as alpha in a number of packs.
One such change is in the previously endangered Hackius Memelo: the odd beasts of this group appear to have re-emerged as a viable species with the lessening of the harsh competition that forced them out of the hunting grounds of their cousins the Hackius Unionus in my first observations. The short haired Memelo that has slunk back into these areas with the sudden death of a powerful Unionus Alpha may in fact be shortly joined by a fellow Memelo, whose first recorded calls of “comrade, comrade” were so astonishing for our filming team to observe.
These base creatures have few real feelings, and any affectations of such pain is to tempt unwitting bystanders into becoming prey.
Indeed, these rich hunting grounds have attracted an even more astonishing return from being a loud yet respected elder beast who in our first investigations appeared to have diminished in significance among the packs. This former beta looks set to contest the alphas of the Unionus, with the strength and numerousness of their cries placing them as a dangerous enemy to certain younger members of opponent packs, ensuring that the eventual fight to come will be bloody. Fear not dear readers, these base creatures have few real feelings, and any affectations of such pain is to tempt unwitting bystanders into becoming prey.
Similarly, among the blue-heckled Hackius Politicolum a large beast appears to have returned from isolation in the deepest forests of the South, intimidating all the betas into submission, and looks sure to take the role of alpha they already bear the scars of. For an animal whose wounds are still raw from the last fight they experienced, such bravery appears admirable, if somewhat foolhardy.
Re-emergences such as these indicate a stark change in the climate of Oxford, with certain elderly beasts experiencing greater longevity through progression from junior to more mature nests, forcing younger Hackius into more ferocious competition against one another. The Chief Wrangler of the Oxford Protected Reserve could not be found for comment, being in attendance of a cooking with spices class.
