Churches across the country will ring their bells tomorrow as a mark of solidarity following the devastating fire at Notre Dame Cathedral.
Christ Church Cathedral will partake in this nationwide action, initiated by the Archbishops of Canterbury and York. Its bells will toll for seven minutes beginning at 7pm.
Canon Dr Edmund Newey, sub dean, said: “Christ Church is proud to join countless other churches across the country in expressing our solidarity with them in prayer, and by the ringing of our bells on Thursday.”
The fire at Notre Dame caused significant damage with the roof and the spire collapsing. The main structure, including the two bell towers was saved, although the full extent of damage is not yet clear.
President Emmanuel Macron vowed the cathedral would be rebuilt within five years “even more beautifully”. Already more than €600m have been pledged in the international fundraising campaign to restore the cathedral.
