Wilde window offered to University College

College News News

University College has been offered a stained glass window depicting Oscar Wilde, it was announced in a recent JCR meeting.

Although Wilde is not an alumnus, his original letters and writings are housed in the library and this is the reason for the proposal. College authorities wanted the opinions of JCR students before deciding whether to accept the donation.

It is being offered on behalf of the Oscar Wilde foundation although the exact donor wishes to remain anonymous and so their identity was not revealed.

The College has not announced when the window will be installed as they have not yet reached a decision about accepting it.

JCR students reacted favourably to the gift since it would increase the level of diversity represented in college artwork as the playwright is a prominent LGBT+ figure.

However, there were concerns raised that too great a proportion of pieces in college depict white men and this is not representative of the current composition of students and academics.

It is proposed that it be installed in the New Library in a window that faces on to Merton Street; as that window receives the most sunlight.
